Two School Tennis Summits on Tap for 2009

Last September USTA New England hosted its second annual School Tennis Summit at Babson College in Wellesley, Mass.

More than 70 teachers, curriculum directors and after-school programming coordinators gathered for a daylong introduction on the basics of teaching the game of tennis to youngsters. The one-day event drew participants from all six New England states.

This year we are proud to announce that two School Tennis Summits will be held – one in Massachusetts and the other in Maine.

Shoreham Elementary wraps up first “Quick Start” program

Shoreham Quick Start

The Shoreham Elementary School tennis program recently finished up their first session using the Quick Start Program. Instructors Wilson MacIntire and De De Flaff taught children how to play the game of tennis using this program Using special racquets, balls, and a smaller court, children learn the basic of the game on a smaller level. The program was created to help get more children interested in the game of tennis. With USTA grants and the help of the New England Division of the USTA, the Shoreham Elementary school tennis program was able to use this great program and teach their students the wonders of the game of tennis..

CCRI TO HOLD TENNIS TOURNEY OCT. 6-7

The Community College of Rhode Island will hold a tennis tournament on Oct. 6-7 at the Broad Rock Middle School in Wakefield, R.I. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the school's men's and women's tennis teams. The event, which begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 6, will feature three open doubles divisions: Men's, women's and mixed.

BATTLE OF THE SECTIONS A HIT IN NY

The first ever “Battle of the Sections: A Northeast Region Event” took place over the weekend, September 15th and 16th, at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY. Play started late on Saturday due to a soggy morning. However, all the teams chipped in to dry off courts so they could get started quickly. Using 16 courts across the complex, 16 teams from 4 USTA Sections competed. Due to repairs needing to be made on courts 5 and 12, teams were allowed to use Louis Armstrong Stadium and the Grandstands for matches throughout the weekend.
