The recent 2010 Nike Junior Tour USA National Masters New England section qualifier tournaments served as center stage for some of the region’s top players.
Cumberland, R.I.’s Jared Donaldson found himself back on top of the event he won as a 12-year-old in 2008. Now, 13, Donaldson won this year’s qualifier in the 14s at the Longfellow Club in Wayland, Mass.

A few months ago Wayne Harrell, a USTA New England Player Development Committee member, suggested that the section pilot a mixed doubles event and volunteered to run it. Everyone is so glad that he did.
On Feb. 28, 34 boys and girls in the 18- and 16-and-under age divisions competed for trophies and bragging rights as the best mixed doubles team in the New England Section.

NORWALK, Conn. – The QuickStart Tennis Revolution has taken the Norwalk area by storm, as players, parents and coaches are seeing positive results.
Intensity Club in Norwalk held a U8 and U10 QuickStart tournament in January and we will be hosting one in March.

It proved to be quite a successful fall tennis season for the Wheaton women’s tennis team.

MOBILE, Ala. – Former USTA New England Junior star Meghan McCooey, a native of Cumberland, R.I and a senior captain at Tufts University, teamed with junior captain Julia Browne to win their second straight Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Small College National Championship in doubles on Friday afternoon at the Copeland-Cox Tennis Center.

A group of New England’s top junior tennis players participated in a unique camp in August on the grass courts at historic Longwood Cricket Club.
The group took part in a doubles-specific clinic and received instruction from host professional Tim Smith and certified High Performance Coaches.

The spoils of victory did not end with a trophy and a handshake for the 2009 USTA New England Section Junior singles and doubles champions.
As a result of their hard work, dedication and ultimate victory on the courts last summer, the junior champions had the privilege of attending a pair of pro events and the opportunity to meet and greet some of the game’s best players in the process.

Three successful New England tournament director workshops were held in April. More than 65 tournament directors and administrators participated in sessions held at the Longfellow Sports Club in Natick, the Tennis and Fitness Center in Rocky Hill, CT and the Racket and Fitness Center in Portland, ME.

Delray Beach, Fla. – Cumberland, Rhode Island’s Jared Donaldson entered last week’s USTA Boys’ National Spring Championship as the top seed.

With the busy summer national schedule of events completed and school back in session, four of New England's top prospects joined premiere high performance coach Jeff Bearup a few weeks ago on an early Friday morning flight to Palo Alto, CA. By winning their divisions in qualifying tournaments earlier this year Jillian Rooney, Aaron Revzin, Valeria Deronjic and Jared Donaldson were invited by the Nike Junior Tour on this all expenses paid trip to represent our section at the NJT National Masters Team Championships, held at the legendary Stanford University tennis facility

Just one week after this year's US Open was over, four of New England's youngest future prospects had the opportunity to play on the same courts, albeit without the crowds, as the pros, at the USTA's Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. Nicole Frenkel, Priyanka Sundhar, Richard Ciammara and Patrick Wyeth were invited to represent our section in this 10 and under cross sectional team competition with Eastern, Middles States and Mid-Atlantic sections. Late August saw an elite group of New England's top ranked junior players have a fun and instructive day playing doubles on the site of the first Davis Cup competition, at the oldest grass-court club in the U.S. Founded in 1877, the Longwood Cricket Club in Chestnut Hill, MA was host for the second year in a row to this USTA NE sponsored High Performance initiative. This camp is one of several initiatives that are designed to provide our top junior prospects with development opportunities.

Aaron Revzin (Needham, MA) and Nolan Paige (Fairfield, CT) ended 2007 as the 4th ranked boys 14 team in the nation. To top this off last month they had an outstanding result at the USTA Boys 14 National Championships in San Antonio, Texas where they advanced all the way to the doubles semi-finals and an eventual third place finish. Watertown, Mass. resident Erica Robertson, who competed last week in the Empire Loan 50K Challenger Pro Circuit event at the Sportsmen's Tennis Club, has signed on to play at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. Robertson, who attended the Buckingham, Browne and Nichols School, received a combined academic and athletic scholarship.

Former USTA New England junior star and top-seeded Siobhan Finicane of Pomona-Pitzer defeated fifth-seeded Cary Gibson of Williams College 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 to win the NCAA Division III singles title.

On May 10th, almost 50 boys and girls between the ages of 7 and 11 participated in a player development camp sponsored by USTA New England and hosted by volunteer Wayne Harrell at the Grande Meadows Club in Longmeadow, MA. Bobby Bernstein, USTA Player Development administrator of junior and collegiate competitions, was up from Boca Raton to lead the activities for the day.

NEWPORT, R.I. – Forget about the trophies, plaques and T-shirts. The winners of the USTA New England 2007 Junior Section Doubles Championships received a Cash prize for the efforts. At a special ceremony recognizing their achievements, the players were invited to the Gibson Guitar Champions Cup at the International Tennis Hall of Fame.

Although it occurred over the holiday break, there was still plenty of learning happening at Harvard University. USTA New England held a high-performance development camp on the Cambridge (Mass.) campus and had some quality instructors on hand to teach the finer points of tennis.

Shreveport, La. – To say that Rachel Kahan played well at the Intersectional tournament is like calling "Rocky" a pretty good movie. Kahan, a Unionville, Conn. Native, was simply dominating at the event, leaving some of the top 16s in the nation in her wake.
