Serena Williams, the world’s top ranked tennis player and winner of 10 Grand Slam singles titles, including the 2009 Australian Open, will play in Boston this summer on July 9. Serena plays for the Washington Kastles of the Advanta World TeamTennis Pro League and will be in town to take on the Boston Lobsters at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, Mass. One lucky fan will win two tickets to the match where they will meet Serena and take a picture with her by winning the essay contest "How Serena Williams Inspires Me."
The contest is open to all Massachusetts students age 13-18. Students should submit an essay (1-2 pages) on the reasons why Serena Williams inspires them on and off the tennis court. The deadline for submission is June 1, 2009. Submit your essay by e-mailing it to Debbie@bostonlobsters.net.
Beginning in the late 1990s, Serena Williams became one of the world’s most talented and exciting tennis players. She impresses fans with an outgoing personality, unique fashion sense, and striking good looks and her amazing accomplishments on the court have given her a permanent place in the history books.
But with all of her success at tennis, she has continued to expand and grow as a person and that impresses the world as much as her determination on the court. It is her humility, her many other accomplishments and generosity off the court that make her truly a person to admire.
In addition to her successful fashion line, Serena also recently opened a school in Kenya which will give a chance to hundreds of primary school students to pursue secondary school education.
Serena and her sister Venus have together dominated women’s tennis for a decade, inspiring athletes to be their best and to be true to themselves.
The winner of the "Why Serena Williams Inspires Me Essay Contest" will be selected and notified on June 1, 2009.
