 USTA New England Announces

First Female Executive Director

Westborough, MAUSTA New England announced today the appointment of Marikate Murren from Shelton, CT as the new Executive Director and the first female to acquire the position.

In this new role, Murren will be responsible for leading the organization’s mission "To Promote and Develop the Growth of Tennis" throughout New England. She will also work to execute the strategic plan and serve as a liaison between the section and key stakeholders. Murren is scheduled to start on June 1, 2012.

"I’m incredibly excited for this opportunity and challenge to continue leading such a successful organization," said Murren. "USTA New England has had a long standing history of excellence and achievements, not only with the staff, but also with their local communities and providers."

When discussing how her professional and personal experiences relate to her new role as Executive Director, she explained, "It all comes down to relationships with consumers and cross collaboration between external organizations and partners."

Murren comes to the New England section from the National USTA office in White Plains, NY. There, Murren held the position of the USTA Manager, Jr. Team Tennis where she oversaw the national program and measured a 12% increase in participation. She also worked to cross-promote USTA Jr. Team Tennis with 10 and Under Tennis competition.

"We are pleased to announce Marikate’s new role as the Executive Director for our organization," said Gary Pina, USTA New England Board President. "Her business expertise and over 20 years of experience in the tennis industry will be great assets to our team and we look forward to working with her."

Her career in the tennis industry began when she was named the Women’s Head Tennis Coach at the University of Connecticut, shortly after she was a key player on their Division I team. She continued her leadership in managing park and recreation programs in Connecticut and as Director of Campus Recreation and Intramurals at Gettysburg College until she assumed her role at the National USTA office.

Murren received her Bachelors Degree in Economic and Masters Degree in Sports Management from the University of Connecticut. She currently serves on the National USTA Jr. Team Tennis committee.
